About us

Gigi Popa

One of the few Saxons (German minority) left in Romania, nine years after the 1989 revolution, Gigi and Elena met Cristoph Promberger, project leader of the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project, and immediately got involved in the Project’s ecotourism programme, eventually opening Pension Elena in 1998.

However, Gigi still kept up his entertainment skills (before the revolution, he played in a band entertaining tourists in Poiana Brasov ) and he is always available to chat with his guests and on some evenings, he grabs his beloved guitar and sings old and new songs. But he is also an excellent chef and lets visitors enjoy barbeque evenings at the family cabin with a stunning view over Piatra Craiului Mountain.

Elena Popa

Elena is the heart of the guesthouse and does most of the cooking. The Popas were always a very hospitable family and always had guests, so Elena had many opportunities to develop her cooking skills. Already in the Ceausescu times she was a very appreciated cook. Elena has specialised in traditional Romanian food and in vegetarian food.

Beatrice Benedek

Only child of Gigi and Elena , Beatrice now runs her own eco-tourism Agency !!Link,

but still helps out in the Pension si grew up in . Like her mother, Beatrice is an excellent cook.
